PSU Art Team
The PSU Art Team is a team of students that create, curate, and maintain artistic spaces in Plemmons Student Union. From monthly exhibitions in the Looking Glass Gallery, to curating spaces with pieces from the permanent art collections – the PSU Art Team is responsible for it all! Backed by staff and faculty in the PSU Art Committee, this program bolsters a community of practice that is committed to professional development, hands-on learning, and student-centered arts engagement.
This team has four positions that are available as student employment opportunities. The Collections and Gallery Manager, the Looking Glass Gallery Curator, the Social Media Manager and Preparator. Emma Hancock
Art Collections and Looking Glass Gallery Manager
Emma is a Senior at Appalachian State, majoring in Art and Visual Culture with a concentration in Art History and a minor in Religious Studies. Previously, Emma received her Associates from University of Delaware while majoring in Psychology. She is currently in the Honors College with a focus on material religion. She brought back the Art History Club after two years of inactivity, while also acting as Co-Vice President of the Religious Studies Club and Treasurer of Pagan Club. She is dedicated to increasing the visibility, accessibility, and engagement around the arts. In her tenure, she has developed the Visual and Material Reference Library, the “Picturing Mountaineers” project with New Mountaineer Orientation, and restored the Frank Gehry Cross Check Chair with Industrial Design Alumni Eli Poulsen.
Sandy Zufall
Social Media Manager
Sandy is a junior Studio Art major with a concentration in Metalsmithing and Jewelry Design. She has a passion for for creating functional and beautiful objects that incorporate symbolic imagery, and she plans to study ceramics alongside her metalsmithing practice. As Marketing Coordinator for the Looking Glass Gallery, she is responsible for developing and publicizing promotional materials, photographing acquisitions, and assisting with exhibition planning and installation. She hopes to increase local awareness of the gallery’s exhibitions, events, and featured artists. She’s excited by the opportunity to foster community engagement through the arts and promote the value of creative expression.
Brennan Hazle
Curator
Brennan Hazle is a junior majoring in Arts Management with minors in Nonprofit Management and Studio Arts. He is passionate about making the arts accessible to everyone, and through his role as gallery curator, he hopes to strengthen their commitment to community engagement. He believes it is immensely valuable to engage Appalachian State’s student body with art in ways that foster critical thinking and encourage reflection on the communities around them. His goal is to provide exhibitions that are both thought-provoking and inclusive, enriching the experiences of the campus and local community. After graduation, he plans to pursue a career in public arts programming with a focus on youth engagement.
